Jess Coles is a writer, director and musician. She got her start as a Production Assistant on several hit series, including House of Cards, Master of None, and High Maintenance. After getting the lay of the land, Jess taught herself to shoot and edit and entered the world of small, soup- to- nuts commercial production. She made music videos for House of Feelings, fashion films for Sahroo Bridal, and many more. Her work in this space landed her a job as co- director and DP of the Public Theater’s award- winning experimental film Capsule (Nice & Tokyo 2022), written by and starring Whitney White and Peter Mark Kendall. Most recently, Jess was hired by writer/ actor Helen Cespedes to direct the short film “The Decision,” a spoof on a health class video for thirty- somethings trying to decide if they want to get pregnant, which is in post- production.
In the meantime, Jess taught herself guitar and songwriting in order to tackle an entirely different genre: the movie musical. These persuits lead to a quarantine collaboration with the Tony and Grammy award nominated composer Daniel Kluger on a self- released EP Real Soon; with Jess writing, performing and recording the songs herself. She wrote her first short film, My Lovers Are a Collection of Books I’ll Never Get Back, a musical about a wary actor who falls for her doppelgänger at an audition. The film, which she also directed and edited, is currently being submitted for the 2023 festival circuit. She is currently writing a feature length musical movie about a group of queer polyamorous musicians.
Jess is a graduate of Vassar College with a BA in Women, Feminist and Queer Studies. Born and raised on the Upper West Side, she is currently raising two cats in Brooklyn. Reach out at jtcoles6@gmail.com
